City of Birmingham Championship Show 2015 Critique

An interesting entry with several dogs and bitches of excellent quality, but not easy to judge as quite a few compromises between beauty and soundness had to be made. It was interesting to see from the catalogue afterwards that two kennels, Kilbourne and Beardswood, were dominating the results.

PD (3,1)

1 Kilbourne Max. What a start of the day with this stunning puppy, not yet seven months old, but truly outstanding in every way. He has everything to look for in a Deerhound at any age; the ideal combination of substance with elegance, lovely outline and proportions and soundness of limbs and mind. Lovely head and expression. Excellent neck and front. Perfect topline which he kept on the move. Excellent substance and bone. Still in a puppy coat. Moved with excellent balance and extension, even if obviously still puppyish, he is already quite sound coming and going. A pleasure to judge and definitely the one I would bring home, I decided to stick my head out and award him the resCC to go along with Best Puppy.

2 Sorimsway Valient Hero. Tall, upstanding dog who has grown quite a lot in his legs and now needs to settle down into his angulation. Attractive expression from dark eyes. Needs to develop in forechest. Quite pleasing topline, moderately angulated behind. Very good coat. Moved with pride and carriage, but needs to stabilize coming and going.

1 Greyflax Domino to Jamalison. Attractive dog, well proportioned and with a lovely outline. Masculine head with good strength without being coarse. Attractive ears. Strong and well shaped neck. Balanced angulation both ends. Excellent topline with a pleasing droop towards hindquarters. Excellent bone. Correct thick and harsh coat. Quite pleasing mover from all angles and sounder than most.

2 Hyndsight To The Limit With Ladygrove. Elegant quality dog in need of more weight. Beautiful, well shaped head with plenty of chiseling and lovely expression. Attractive neck. Moderately angulated in both ends. Moderate length of body. Pleasing coat. He came into his own in movement from the side and scored over his competition in this department, but needs to improve with maturity as seen from behind.

3 Kilbourne Tyne.

PGD (1)

1 Beardswood Strahan at Peopleton. A generously proportioned dog who well fits the description of a rough coated greyhound of larger size and bone. Beautiful eyes, but his large and flat ears somewhat detracted from the expression. Long, very attractive neck with nape. Enough angulation in front. Covers plenty of ground with his body, but could do with slightly more curves and would profit from covering his hipbones. Balanced angulation behind. Pleasing coat. Moved light on his feet and well balanced from the side, but needs to stabilize in front.

LD (6,1)

1 Beardswood Ripley For Calbraidh. A no nonsense, masculine dog with attractive proportions, upstanding and generous, scored in combination of type with movement. Powerful, masculine head, medium dark eyes. Pleasing, well shaped rose ears. Strong neck. Just enough topline. Balanced angulation both ends. Deep and capacious chest. Very good coat. Better than average mover with pleasing soundness and balance.

2 Pharcourse Noah at Stranwith. A very eye-catching dog with a beautiful silhouette and just screaming Deerhound standing. Lovely quality head with excellent expression and ears. Typical nape of neck. Excellent topline. Correct coat quality. He ticks all the boxes for excellent breed type standing, but lets himself down in front movement which is far too high stepping and not getting anywhere, but at all times keeping his lovely outline.

3 Regalflight Rueben.

OD (4,2)

1 Ch. Kwaricott Corelli. An outstandingly sound dog by any possible definition of the word. At a time when this does not seem to be in abundance in the breed, I felt his full package soundness should be richly rewarded. Very strong and masculine. Strong head, could be more refined, but fits the rest of the dog. Well shaped rose ears. Excellent neck, combining strength with length and an attractive typical nape. Perfect forechest. Excellent angulation both ends. Generously proportioned body with plenty of length, depth and volume. Could do with slightly more curves to his topline for perfection. Correct thick, harsh, crisp and ragged coat. Brilliant mover, faultlessly sound and very easily outmoving his adult competition in the ring on the day with his great drive. CC & BOB.

2 Beardswood Quinlan. Attractive, very typical dog. Well chiseled head, a little steering in his expression. Attractive ears. Neck with typical nape. Reasonably angulated in front, he lacked the forechest of the winner. Medium length of body with pleasing curves. Very pleasing coat quality. Would prefer stronger and straighter hocks both standing and moving, but moved light on his feet from the side.

1 Hamiltonhill One Vision. Very elegant, feminine bitch with plenty of energy as a veteran. She is all over quite refined and I would prefer some more substance and bone. Feminine, well shaped head with dark eyes and excellent ears. Could do with better layback of upper arm. Body covering good ground with enough curves. Pleasing coat. Very enthusiastic mover, but has lost some stability coming and going.

PB (5,1)

1 Stranwith Nia For Zandahar. Six months old attractive bitch puppy, very well constructed and with excellent proportions. Beautiful head, very pleasing expression. Strong neck. Well angulated in front and behind. Lovely body curves. Excellent coat. A bit inconsistent in movement, but moved soundly from all directions for a puppy and with a pleasing balance when she wanted to. A very promising puppy indeed.

2 Sorimsway Sweet Victory. Another instantly attractive bitch, elegant, feminine and curvy. Pleasing head, a bit steering in her expression. Very attractive long neck. Has grown a little out of her front angulation. Beautiful topline with the right amount of arch of loin. Well angulated behind. Excellent coat for a puppy her age. Moved very well indeed from the side, puppyish coming and going. Another very promising puppy.

3 Kilbourne Millefleur To Talorpeche.

JB (4,2)

1 Hyndsight Because The Night. Feminine bitch, well constructed and sound. Elegant head, attractive expression. Good neck. Typical curvy silhouette, even if body of medium length, I would not mind her covering a bit more ground standing. Pleasing front angulation, I would not want any more angulation behind. Beautiful coat. Moved soundly from all directions and with good width between her legs.

2 Greyflax Ruby Tuesday. A big, but feminine bitch, upstanding and elegant. Attractive, well chiseled head. Long neck. Not the layback of upper arm of the winner. Would prefer more volume in the lower part of her brisket. Scored heavily in her classical, beautiful outline. Carried herself very well in movement and looked lovely from the side with attractive energy, but would prefer more width and stability as viewed from behind.

1 Kilbourne Zoe. This bitch very much appealed to me for her beauty, if not for her prettiness - when beautiful is much more than skin deep and pretty is not. She is strapping big, long and curvy and scored heavily in movement from all angles. Her head and expression is below average.  Long neck, well set. Well angulated in both ends. Covers plenty of ground both standing and moving, and combined with lovely curves, this makes for a very dramatical and attractive silhouette. Very sound mover from all direction with excellent suppleness and drive. Res CC

2 Charbonnel Gobi to Ladygrove. Very attractive, feminine bitch who scored in head and expression over the winner, but lost out in layback of upper arm and forechest. A daughter of my BOB-winner the last time I judged in the UK, she has inherited many of her mother's qualities. Strong neck. Lovely curvy body with excellent length. Very typical coat. Another who scored in soundness of movement, efficient, supple and well balanced, even if not quite as outstanding as the winner.

3 Kilbourne Penelope at Maelstrom.

LB  (7,2)

1 Foxcliffe Classic Liberty Freedom at Beardswood. Feminine bitch of excellent type, I admired her overall quality and her very attractive silhouette, she is indeed a work of art. Beautiful, well shaped head, eyes medium dark. Strong neck, moderately long. Moderate, but very well balanced angulation in front and behind. Lovely topline and underline making a snake-like curvy silhouette. Beautiful coat of excellent structure. Very sound mover, parallel coming and going, keeping her balance and shape at all times and moving with enough drive to win the CC, but not enough to beat the male.

2 Erewhon Wanton Flame. Another very attractive bitch, curvy and long and with drama to her silhouette. Refined, feminine head, not the best of ears. Long neck. Very well constructed in front. Lovely topline. Typical coat. Moved soundly and efficiently and was serious competition for the winner.

3 Greyflax Summer Breeze.

OB (6,1)

1 Kilbourne Pandora To Talorpeche. Attractive bitch, very curvy, indeed bordering on too curvy. Highly typical, well chiseled, feminine head, excellent ears. Beautiful nape of neck. Deep chest. Well boned. Moderate, but balanced angulation both ends. Lovely coat of excellent structure. Moved very soundly from all angles.

2 Ir Ch Rosslyn Quartet AnCh12 CW13 Jun Ch. Very eye-catching, very attractive bitch of excellent type and above all of excellent quality all the way. Beautiful, well chiseled, feminine head which would have looked even better with more of a moustache. Gentle expression. Long neck. Moderately angulated in front. Lovely body proportions and outline standing. Excellent body coat. Very well handled. Unfortunately moving with the brakes on today and then losing some of her outline, nevertheless a beautiful animal.

3 Ch Greyflax Just Peachy
